“Evidence-based care can only take us so far whether it’s for birth, sickness, or death. When the facts run out, as they inevitably do, only from within can anyone bring forward and test their own admirable truth.” This hit me so close to home. I studied midwifery for 2.5 years before coming to terms with the fact that I couldn’t support the atrocities that occurs within the system. While I’ll always make room for nuance, the overuse of intervention is severely disturbing birth and womens, babies and families experiences. Thank you for articulating this so well.

I’m so glad this resonated with you, Carly! It’s such a big deal. Too many good birth workers and aspiring birth workers also end up traumatized and burning out or walling off. It’s bad for both the givers and receivers of that model of care—we really need transformation.

Agree completely! I’ve found my way as a birth worker (doula) thankfully, but it’s a hugely challenging journey for birth guardians AND families who need their support.

That’s so great! I made that same turn from pre-med headed toward OB/GYN, then pivoted toward Nurse Midwifery, then pivoted again when I found the role of doula. I’m still studying midwifery (and so much more), but also still figuring out how I can really make a difference because the existing boxes don’t “allow” the more full potential for supporting families. Always glad to meet and connect with other people who are helping forge a more nuanced path in birth. Thank you so much for chiming in and I wish you so much goodness 🧡
