Prioritizing the secret and sacred days of early pregnancy
Self-care ideas from Nature for supporting the creative (and destructive!) forces at work in the first trimester
The Secret and Sacred days of early pregnancy are truly indescribable: the feeling of a mysterious being coming invisibly to life inside of your womb. It’s a high-intensity time, full potentially of great pleasure or great turmoil. Here, I share the science of how Nature, the source of all fertility, offers the greatest support a woman can lean on through the potent portal of the first trimester. For miscarriage support, please visit this post instead.
Early pregnancy is crucial for baby’s development, and sets the stage for development across the rest of the pregnancy (and even their life).
Yet mainstream care offers little to nothing to mothers in this stage.
Thus, these very early stages are times women often walk alone.
But although they can’t be seen, big things are happening in the first trimester!
Early pregnancy is crucial for baby’s development, and sets the stage for development across the rest of the pregnancy (and even their life).
What should you do in the first trimester of pregnancy?
In this post, I wanted to share some things that can support this stage of pregnancy that are maybe a little outside of what you may have thought of before.
Or perhaps this post just may give some extra detail to why these things are so important.
I argue that sleeping, napping, sunbathing, earthing, and electromagnetic hygiene are the most important things a woman can do for herself and her baby in the first trimester. Together, these things may be even more important than diet.
Sleeping & napping.
Sunbathing.
Earthing.
Electromagnetic hygiene.
These simple things all have a large base of evidence for application in pregnancy (upgrade to a Practitioner subscription to access my personal curated research library).
Here’s the summary of how to care for pregnancy from the quantum scale and up:
You’ll need more rest and sleep and time with melatonin and the other endogenous antioxidants flowing for healthy implantation, remodeling, and autophagy
You’ll need more sunlight for all the things sunlight does, including hormonal patterns, effects on blood pressure and blood sugar, and photobiomodulation
You’ll need to connect to the Earth to soak up healing electrons to mop up the extra cellular waste from your mitochondria working so hard
And you’ll need to protect your baby from the disruption of manmade electromagnetic frequencies
Getting your environment and schedule right can make all the difference in your pregnancy.
The mystery of pregnancy outcomes between women and even between different pregnancies in the same woman
Many women are not in “ideal” situations or eating “ideal” pregnancy diets, but still have pleasant and healthy pregnancies. Many women are in “ideal” situations and eat an “ideal” pregnancy diet, yet still suffer greatly in pregnancy.
Understanding the importance of the meaningful connection to nature (ie, quantum biology) can help explain these differences in outcomes.
At the same time, life is so mysterious and we cannot control it, perfect it, or make it come.
For miscarriage support, I wrote another post, and I welcome you to jump over there now.
Circadian means “around the day” and implies the duality of all of life (even and especially in making new life)
Optimizing the circadian polarities of light & dark, warmth & coolness, rest & activity, feed & fast, social & alone, noise & quiet all help keep the entire body in harmony with it’s polar processes of creation & destruction.
Most people think of pregnancy as a process of growth, but don’t understand the great destructive forces that also play key roles.
In order to develop, things must change.
In order to build something new, the old must be destroyed.
This is called various names such as “remodeling” and “differentiation” in scientific literature.
For one of many examples, we know humans go through an embryonic stage of having a tail, which is dissolved. We also grow many rows of nipples, which are then taken back.
In mythology, these creative and destructive forces would be described by the various powers of The Mother.
Around the world, people of the past respected and honored the wisdom of both the light mother and the dark mother.
Why you must not suppress darkness in pregnancy
Today’s world tends to elevate the light mother at the expense of the dark mother, and the result is an imbalance of the creative & destructive powers.
Artificial light. Artificial heat. Artificial noise. Artificial frequencies.
These all are part of why infertility, miscarriage, and birth defects are on the rise.
Melatonin’s roles in early pregnancy
There are 4 sources of melatonin women can look to in early pregnancy: a dark night, daytime sunlight, her microbiome, and healthy food. Later in pregnancy, the placenta will nourish both mother and baby with additional melatonin, but in the first trimester this is not yet happening.
Not only does melatonin facilitate implantation, but it also helps balance redox through its potent antioxidant cascade. Healthy redox is absolutely central to baby’s healthy development and preventing miscarriage and birth defects.
Redox is a not-so-scary concept from chemistry talking about the balance of positive (+) and negative (-) charges in cells. It’s like your car battery: you need the electrical currents (the red and black cables) lined up correctly or else the battery won’t work. It’s the same in cells!
And in pregnancy, these charges need to be exactly right to have a healthy outcome.
We actually do best to think about this before the pregnancy even starts, which is why preconception care and conscious conception can be such valuable assets to a pregnancy.
Even though we may not be consciously aware of this scale of reality, it is still fundamentally happening.
In the field of quantum, we say “little hinges swing big doors.”
So, what can you actually do? Why do I think sleep, sunlight, earthing and electromagnetic hygiene are the most important things?
Inside of mitochondria, which are the main producers and regulators of redox states, we have something called the electron transport chain (shown below in its 4 steps). The electron transport chain funnels energy.
If you have ever heard about the benefits of hydration—that’s about mitochondrial health because the electron transport chain creates water in cells.
If you’ve ever heard about the benefits of molecular hydrogen—that’s about mitochondrial health because the electron transport deals in the raw atoms of H+, O2-, in addition to electrons.
If you’ve ever heard of cellular energy as ATP—that’s about mitochondrial health because that is yet another product of the electron transport chain.
Mitochondria are central factors in our health, and they directly respond to the light we are exposing ourselves to and living within. They are highly present in the tissues of our reproductive organs in order to provide the energy and redox signaling needed for making a healthy baby.
Don’t make this more complicated than it needs to be. Here’s what you can do to support early pregnancy and placental development:
Get sleep lights throughout your house to use between sunset and dawn (here are some that work great)
Set the thermostat to be cooler at night and warmer in the day
When you wake up in the morning, go outside first thing (or at least open the window) before turning on artificial light signals (use red/amber for safety if you wake up before sunrise)
Spend as much time outside as you comfortably can each day (preferably get barefoot in nature or a natural body of water, too)
Keep at least 18 inches between you and nnemfs as much as possible (power outlets, devices, wifi routers)
And of course, there are no guarantees. Life is so mysterious and none of us can claim to have all the answers. These are just more drops in the bucket of our collective wisdom.
I’m training practitioners to teach this information in their practices.

Love this post Nikko! The part about the Light and Dark mother is so potent to me. Reading Kelly Brogans "Reclaimed Woman" right now and have been personally working with inner darkness as I found out that my number four is going to be yet another little boy. Meaning that this lifetime wont hold a girl baby for me. Feeling all the big feels around that and working strongly with the Dark Mother energy to release that dream. I think one of my favorite aspects of Quantum and Circadian Biology is how it mirrors my spiritual journey in its language and concepts as well as being a guidebook for my physiology!
