I am grateful for the gracious invitation by Nikko Kennedy to share my insights with you in her newsletter. When I interviewed Nikko on my podcast “The Quantum Connection” with my co-host Vanessa Baldwin, I was truly blown away by her vast knowledge and the massive importance of her work.
After having worked as a psychotherapist for many years, I have come to learn that THE missing piece in the field of mental health is lifestyle, and more specifically, circadian health.
As a circadian clinician, I have been mainly focusing on mental and physical health of adults from a circadian perspective. Nikko helped me to see just how profoundly circadian health affects women’s pregnancies, childbirth AND the health of her child long before conception! What she shared on our podcast firmly cemented my knowing that we cannot be healthy when disconnected from nature.
So, when I saw this recent NPR article about a new pharmaceutical designed to specifically treat women with PPD, my heart sank a little… While not surprised by the announcement of this pill, it reminded me of how far we have to go to help mothers’ physical and mental health. Increasing awareness is vital to the well being of society at large to improve health and decrease suffering.
Yes, PPD is extremely serious. And, if you are reading this and worried about your extreme low mood and not feeling connected to your baby, you should seek out specialists! I am not a doctor nor a birth specialist, but I think it is important to consider that it is a smaller percentage of women who struggle with PPD, and even then a smaller amount with symptoms in the severe category requiring drastic measures beyond medication. And yet, to be fair, I had a psychotherapy client once who opted for SSRI’s, and that option worked great for her. I honor each woman’s decision as to what she feels is best.
However, it is an ethical and moral issue, and a tragic failure on the part of centralized medicine to not educate women about circadian health! Before medications are swiftly doled out such as this PPD pill, women with any level of symptoms should first be informed as to the simple changes they can make to help their bodies during the post-birth transition.
Healthcare providers should teach all women about circadian rhythm and how to improve it before, during and after pregnancy. They should also be referring women to other non-invasive but powerful healing modalities such as classical homeopathy. This band aid approach of medication only deprives women of the opportunity of trusting their bodies and healing naturally. But, there is a lot less money to be made and these practices are considered fringe or worse!
Lastly, I implore all women to seek community of supportive people everywhere and anywhere they can. If you’re feeling isolated and down, please know that what you’re going through is not a personal failure on your part in any way! You and your body are doing the very best possible considering whatever circumstances and health status you have.
Since you’re reading Nikko’s newsletter, I know you’re already nourished by her knowledge, wisdom and deep compassion.
If you’d like additional support, please feel free to reach out to me if you’re interested in adding homeopathy to your toolkit!
With much love,
Heather
